The school’s beach volleyball team plays at coastal locations throughout San Diego, while the cheer program supports campus life with enthusiasm. The cross country program has produced two Olympians and numerous league titles. Football includes both flag and tackle teams, competing against historic rivals, and the golf teams play on renowned courses like Balboa and Torrey Pines.
Similarly, St. Augustine High School offers a full spectrum of championship-quality sports teams. Since joining the CIF and the San Diego City Conference in the 1960s, the school has won 170 league titles, 41 CIF championships, and 4 state titles in sports such as golf, soccer, and basketball. Over 70% of the student body participates in at least one of the 15 sports offered, including football, cross-country, and club beach volleyball.

San Diego State University (SDSU) competes in NCAA Division I and is set to join the Pac-12 Conference in July 2026. San Diego Mesa College offers 19 award-winning sports teams, including men’s baseball, basketball, cross country, football, soccer, swimming/diving, track and field, volleyball, and water polo; and women’s badminton, basketball, beach volleyball, cross country, soccer, softball, swimming/diving, track and field, volleyball, and water polo. The college’s state-of-the-art Exercise Science building provides facilities for various fitness activities, supporting student-athletes in their academic and athletic pursuits.

San Diego is home to several professional sports teams that draw fans from across the region. The San Diego Padres represent the city in Major League Baseball, with upcoming home games at Petco Park.
In soccer, San Diego FC (SDFC) competes in Major League Soccer and recently kicked off its 2026 season at Snapdragon Stadium, participating in the Concacaf Champions Cup.
The city’s commitment to women’s sports is evident with the opening of “One of Us,” San Diego’s first women’s sports bar, located in North Park.
